Sexual consent

 listen to this page

Sexual consent is when people freely agree to engage in sexual acts.

Consent is...

Saying ‘yes’ to one kind of sexual activity does not mean ‘yes’ to all sexual activity. It has to be specific.

Consent is ongoing. You can change your mind at any time.

Consent is for all people, of all sexualities and all ages.

You can NOT consent if:

  • Affected by drugs and alcohol
  • Asleep or passed out
  • Forced, pressured, blackmailed or tricked
  • Do not understand the sexual act

Consent Laws

The age of consent is different in each Australian state and territory.

In the Northern Territory (NT) the age of consent is 16.

No one under the age of 16 can legally consent to sex in the NT.

For other states and territories laws click here.

If you are under 18 in the NT, it is NOT possible (legally) to consent to having sex with someone who is in a caring or supervisory role with you (such as a teacher, parent, family member, sporting coach, youth worker, foster carer, religious leader).
